Is it acceptable to add a new W2012 Server to a 2008 Domain without promoting it to DC?

We currently run a W2008SBS with a second 2008 Server for @vantage and a win7 box acting as a server for CSR24.  My understanding is that the SBS has to be the DC.

I wouldn't mind demoting the SBS and making the 2012 the DC if it's doable.  My ultimate goal is to split the SBS box with a second 2012 anyways.  DC, Exchange and TAM on one box makes me nervous!

Thoughts?

I would think this is perfectly acceptable.  I added one, but I did promote it to DC.  I don't see why it wouldn't work in your situation.  I never raised the domain or Forrest level.

As far as I know SBS is very limited it must be a dc and will throw a fit my sbs2k3 would shutdown after 20mins after i dcpromo it.

I would watch your steps and be ready to roll back.  SBS is sold at a discount for smaller offices and if you cross the threshold of what they think you need it gets mean.

Another point.

I currently have 2008 and 2012 as DC's on my network but neither of them are SBS.
