Title: Zurich website error (Java?)
Post by: Bobby Gurba on March 15, 2010, 01:39:48 PM
I am running into an error when I am using the Zurich EZSB website. The menu is all distorted due to what I believe is a Java error. The menus display a red X and when you click on it, it comes up with the following Java error:

java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: 0
   at java.lang.String.charAt(Unknown Source)
   at menu.toColor(menu.java:1043)
   at menu.init(menu.java:67)
   at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source)
   at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
Exception: java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: 0

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Java. I even reinstalled IE and tried it on both IE7 and IE8 and the same error still comes up. When I called the Zurich helpdesk, they had me try viewing it in compatibility mode, still no luck.

Any ideas or suggestions?

ah rats... safe to assume the get the error after you login?

I'll check if any of our CSRs access the Zurich site.

do you run any proxy, url filtering, openDNS or other security software or hardware... I have seen issues where javascripts fail because they may reference other scripts which are blocked.

No proxy, no url filtering or anything like that. I also just checked it using Chrome, no joy. It has to be something with Java, I just have no idea what it can be. I figured a fresh install would do the trick, but it did not.

my mistake - this is Java not Javascript... the page you are on seems to be running a Java applet of somekind.  I signed in with a visitor account, but there is no evidence of a Java applet for me.

Have you tried going into it from a different workstation?

I have tried from several different workstations, as well as a couple of my servers.

If you're running IE8, you have to run ALL sites in compatibility mode in order to get it to work.

Well, I suppose the alternative is to go line by line in the page code and see what sites they're calling to, but it's obviously more than just *.ezbs.com.  I had *.zurichna.com and *.ezbs.com in Compatibility, and it didn't work.  When I ran ALL in compatibility...  magic.

I was just about to add a thread about the Zurich site but the Search tool helped me find this one.  I love the new forums!

I have the same issue but only on my Win7 IE8 systems.  Additionally when using Java 6 Update 10 or higher the Java subsection in Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced disappears.  I have confirmed with the Zurich help desk that they are aware of the problem but don't have a solution other than my Java install must be faulty :(

So at this point I don't know what to do.  I've toyed with the settings in the Java console in Control Panel with no luck.  I've installed most of the Java updates for version 6 hoping an older version would still work, no joy.

It's not really a java issue at all.  Rather, it's a "how the browser invokes java" problem.  Check out my above post for a workaround.

I still have no joy with this. I even tried on my home computer, and I am getting the exact same error. I am just going to call up their help desk until they give me a solution...I'll post what I find out.

Just got off the phone with the help desk and this is what I have found out...

If your using IE8, go to Compatibility View Settings and check the 'Display all websites in Compatibility view' box.
Close down all windows.
Reopen IE8 and it *should work.

That is directly from the guy @ the help desk. When I did those steps, it did actually work for me on the computer that I was on. When I went to another computer to try the same thing, it did not work.

I also just tested to see if it would work in Chrome using the IE-based-tab extension, and surprisingly enough it works!!!

I'm not really sure if the above two steps are solutions more than they are band-aides...but if you need to get it working quick they are definitely good options.

If you have the Google toolbar enabled, try disabling that and see if it helps. I found it messing with Selective the past few days.

Also, I try to add all the carriers core domains to the trusted list in IE to help with compatibility and these types of things.

Last but not least, remove any older versions of Java you have. You may have several.

toolbars are the devil's work!  Esp. anything from conduit.com - the roll-yer-own toolbar people.
