We use assigned IP addresses here and I've always set them up without any problems. Now that IPv6 is being rolled out do I need to be assigning manual IPv6 addresses (plus DNS server addresses?) for our workstations or is it only important when browsing the web and is already being taken care of by our current DNS server?
I remember stories from a couple of months back about IPv4 addresses running out and how IPv6 will solve the problem but haven't seen anything since about anything regular network admins like me would have to do about it.
For the immediate future, you should be fine staying with all your tried and true IPv4 settings.

Yeah I would think that if anything, IPv6 would really be required at the gateway end of things, since we don't need 1.2 trillion ip addresses internally your normal class-c ipv4 addressing should be fine.
On the flip side, just a thought...if you want static IPs but the benefits of DHCP - you can always do what I do and use DHCP but use "reservations" for workstations. Basically DHCP gives out addresses like they normally would, but creating a reservation tells the DHCP server to always give the same addy to a comp with a particular MAC address.
Thanks. It looks like at some point I'll need to update our DNS servers to provide IPv6 support. There doesn't appear to be any need to start panicking yet though, it will only be new IPv6-only websites that we won't be able to find.
