Public Service Announcement to those who do their own hardware repairs...

Had an interesting occurrence the other day when I was replacing the hinged on my 6 year old Dell notebook (another story for another time) after putting all back together (only had a few screws leftover ;) the computer would not connect to HTTPS sites, such as GMail etc.

of course I Googled it and found a few possibilities.

The one that worked was a simple matter of changing the date.   During the replacement process the primary battery was removed for quite some time.  Apparently the on board clock battery needs to be replaced because the notebook had a 2008 date.  correcting the date instantly fixed the issue.

So, it's not that Google cannot connect to https sites, it's that since the time and date was wrong on the PC the certificates were coming up as invalid and thus you were unable to connect to https sites -- am I correct?

I was just wondering why Google couldn't connect to https sites but it took me a while to figure it out  :P

Had a similar issue on a Mobo I just replaced.  Bought a refurb at client's request.   installed and it booted fine, but I didn't catch that it didn't update the date.  Couldn't figure out why Windows Update kept erroring out on me.   Of course the computer was sucked into a time warp and thought it was 2007!   Updated time and was back in business!
