Can someone direct me to the specific laws requiring secure email for drivers license numbers, policy numbers, etc.

I know about ssn's, but boss is asking about the others and I don't know the name of it to get a copy for him.

Thanks.

You'll want to google privacy laws / legislature.

HIPAA is one of the US ones I know about for sure - but there are bound to be others.

I have some articles on Hawaii laws (similar to most states), and from the IIAA, including Red Flags and Driver License Privacy.  I tried to "attach" but this site doesn't allow (they are a bit larger than allowed).

Let me have your email and I'll send them to you.

Or email me directly at lbateman@askoxy.com

Here's a link to a Wikipedia article on the subject that lists most of the laws with links to more in depth information.  I would also check with your state PIA / Big I association.  They usually have information on these things.

Dana,
If you are talking about "Private Information" regulations, it can vary from state to state. I just did the research for Colorado. What it said specifically is:

Definition of Personal Information: A Colorado's resident's first name or first initial and last name in combination with any one or more of the following data elements that relate to the resident, when the data elements are not encrypted, redacted, or secured by any other method rendering the name or the element unreadable or unusable.
•   Social Security Number
•   Driver's License Number
•   Any other state issued ID (such as passport number)
•   Financial information such as bank account number, credit/debit card number, in combination with access number/ PIN code or password that would permit access to a person's financial account
•   Personal health information (PHI) (HIPAA)

I believe it was House Bill 1119.

I only took a brief look at California's laws, but there was something similar to Colorado's in there.  Will have to delve deeper, but for the time being I think I have enough ammo to get them to purchase necessary software to encrypt emails.

Thank you.
